How You Can Help

Sponsor a Child, Contribute, Tutor, Volunteer, Special Opportunity

Sponsor a Child

Literacy Volunteers works with families on literacy for both parents and children. The need, unfortunately, exceeds the funding available to help all those whose request family literacy. Several sponsorships have allowed LV-A to include more children in the program. Reports and photos (when the family agrees) are provided to keep a sponsor up-to-date on the child's progress.

Contribute

Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin is an incorporated, non-profit organization and all donations are tax-deductible — and greatly appreciated. Without community support, LV-A would be unable to provide Basic Literacy, KAP (Family Literacy), English as a Second Language, Theater Literacy, or Prison Literacy Programs.

The Gift of Literacy is a donation to Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin in the name of another person. A contribution of $20 or more entitles recipients to an LVA honorary membership and they will receive a certificate, LV-A program information and a profile of one of our students. Forms for this gift available by download: Gift of Literacy Form.

Every $1 invested in literacy generates about $33 in economic return to the community. It costs approximately $350 to provide an adult learner with one year of tutoring. Here are some ways donations are utilized:

$5,000
~ An entire quarter of home-based Knowledge As Power family literacy services for seven families;
~ Staff time to recruit, train, and support 25 new volunteer tutors.
$2,500
~ One school year in the Knowledge As Power Family Literacy Program for an entire family;
~ A year of an English Conversation class for immigrants.
